From Cartridge to Circular β€” Inside Our Toner Remanufacturing Journey

Most sustainability claims in office technology are made at the point of sale. The more interesting story happens after it β€” when a cartridge is empty, the job is done, and someone has to decide what happens next. For Brother, that decision has been designed into the product for more than two decades, and it has now diverted well over 40 million cartridges from landfill and incineration.

Why linear procurement quietly costs more

The traditional model is simple and wasteful: buy, use, dispose, repeat. Each cycle consumes new virgin plastic, new metal components and new transport emissions, while the old unit becomes someone else's disposal cost. For organisations now reporting against Scope 3 emissions and facing tighter procurement scrutiny, that model is becoming difficult to defend to boards, bidders and regulators alike.

Circularity flips the assumption. A cartridge is not a consumable to be destroyed; it is an engineered assembly whose housing, gears, rollers and electronics can serve multiple lives if the product was designed with that in mind.

The journey, step by step

  1. Return. Empty cartridges are collected free of charge through our UK recycling programme, using pre-paid packaging or bulk collection for larger fleets β€” no cost, and no landfill.
  2. Sort and inspect. Returns are sorted by model and condition. Units suitable for remanufacture are separated from those destined for materials recovery.
  3. Disassemble and clean. Cartridges are stripped to component level. Housings are cleaned, and every wear part is assessed against original specification.
  4. Replace and rebuild. Worn components β€” typically drums, blades and seals β€” are replaced with new parts. Reusable structural components continue their service life.
  5. Refill and test. Rebuilt units are filled with genuine toner and tested to the same performance standards as a new cartridge, including page yield and print quality checks.
  6. Recover the remainder. Anything not suitable for rebuild is separated into material streams for recycling. Our zero-to-landfill commitment means none of it is simply buried.

These are engineering decisions taken years before a cartridge is ever returned β€” and they are the difference between genuine circularity and a recycling badge.

Three practical steps for procurement teams

First, ask suppliers for actual return and diversion figures, not just policy statements. Second, make free take-back a contractual requirement rather than an optional extra. Third, measure total lifetime cost including disposal, because a cheap cartridge with a disposal liability is rarely the cheapest option.
